Urban Rooftop - Royal Botania

Royal Botania - Urban Rooftop

Next in line concept for Royal Botania's 2022 catalogue aims to capture the luxury urban living in the heart of city that is always awake. Shanghai was chosen as a destination for this purpose, as it perfectly fullfills the megalopolis criteria, as well as we happen to have a great connection directly in the city. It is not easy to capture a high res footage in such busy urban jungle. You can see more of this process in the end of the project.

Hero collection of this set is Ninix, staple in Royal Botania's range of products. Designed almost 2 decades ago, it still hold it righteous place in the assortment of brand's catalogue, it being one of the first popular outdoor furniture with chrome frame.

Our digital Rooftop penthouse was designed with reflecting the location we were shooting, Shanghai, and trying to maintain universality enough to it, so it can smoothly blend with the other environments of Royal Botania catalogue

Creation of stepped platforms and nooks that create their own space allowed us to both showcase the furniture as a Hero of the image, as well as being able to be part of the overall residence layout.

High-rise terraces present the obvious advantage of having open sky right above and views over always awake cityscape. We used this aspect whenever we could, but had to maintain the importance of the Furniture to be the center of the story.

As an extension to this package of content, we produced a joined photoshoot with selected Royal Botania pieces and actors on greenscreen, in order to bring them to the same environment and expand on this set.

Behind the scenes of the Location shoot and custom HDRI production

Time-lapse from the main day of the site visit. Tricky part was to find accessible rooftop that would also allow for an interesting view, without capturing famous landmarks ( at least in a first plan, heh )

How it looked on the set :)
More photographers were there since the access to such rooftops is rare to find in Shanghai, as we were told.

This HDRI is the one that was used the most for all the evening shorts.
The resolution of 32-bit file was 26-K, which allowed us to actually fully render the backplates directly from the frame buffer, reacting correctly do DOF and atmospheric effects.
