“Constellations” by Nick Payne

“Constellations” is a play by contemporary British playwright Nick Payne, written in 2011. The play tells the story of the relationship between Roland, a beekeeper, and Marianne, a physicist. Marianne talks poetically about space, quantum mechanics, string theory and multiple universes. This is reflected in the structure of the play: short scenes of interaction between the characters are repeated, each time with different outcomes.

I designed the play in the form of a seven-meter scroll. Each piece of text creates a unique rhythmic pattern.

At the end, it becomes clear that the fragmentation of the plot is not actually about the string theory but is related to the illness of the main female character: due to a brain tumor, Marianne’s memories are falling apart.
