DUALITY OF NOTHINGNESS

2023
Publication & Typographic Design
A book which explores the duality of nothingness; on the loneliness and calmness it holds. The Duality of Nothingness is an interpretation of the first and last chapter of children’s classic literature The Secret Garden, which explores the hostility and warmth the state of nothing creates. Using a refined layout with delicate yet bold typographic elements, it aims to express the fine lines between loneliness and serenity of nothingness.

The work is designed as separate publications for the first and last chapter of the book. Chapter I is designed in B6 with white ink on black paper to express the abandoned and confined nature of character Mary in the opening narrative. In contrast, Chapter XXVII is designed in B5 with black ink on white paper, to emphasise the calm and liberated state of mind of character Archibald Craven.
The work was designed in response to the 2023 ISTD brief ‘Open-Close’, which asked to typographically redesign the first
and last chapter of a book.
