New England Revolution Rebrand

I’m going to start off by saying this took me quite some time to get right (despite how simple it might look), and even for a while after I settled on this design, it took some time before it started to grow on me.

One of the biggest things I like about the New England Revolution’s current badge (maybe the only thing I like about it, to be honest) is its simplicity. There’s no “New England” or “Revolution” on it; it’s not a ham-fisted attempt to say “This is a soccer team and it’s from New England and it’s name is the Revolution and it’s inspired by the American Revolution.” It’s just a small, terribly-drawn flag with a ball design where the field of stars go. But the team has grown up, so I thought it was about time its crayon-scribbled Old Glory did too.

This badge was inspired by Flamengo’s; I wanted something simple, clean, but memorable. So what I came up with was the flag of New England with stripes superimposed on it as both a nod to the American flag and to represent the six states of the New England region (Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Vermont, and Rhode Island). In the upper left corner is what I call the “Star and R”; the ‘R’ is green as a reference to the tree on the flag of New England, and the star points are there as a reference to the blue stars on the Revs’ current badge.

I wanted people to be able to look at the badge and see both the American flag and the flag of New England. But most of all, I wanted people to be able to look at the badge and see something better than what the Revs have now.

I hope I accomplished that.
