Card 0: The Clown

“Hề chèo” - a type of jester character seen regularly in Chèo performances.

Chèo (Vietnamese: [cɛ̂w]) is a form of generally satirical musical theatre, often encompassing dance, traditionally performed by peasants inhabiting the Red River Delta villages during festivals and holidays. Chèo depicts the simple life of rural people and praises the noble qualities of man.

The stories of Chèo may be romantic or tragic, but the clown/ “hề chèo” always comment on actions in a humourous or satirical way as well as to mock the bad habits of feudal society, including the king and mandarin. There are two main types of clowns: short-shirted clown and long-shirted clown, or clown without a cane and clown with a can.

Card no.10: Wheel of Fortune
Wheel of Fortune is a reminder that things are as they are meant to be. Despite all the highs and lows, life continues. You have the freedom to choose, but you must also accept that change is inevitable.

“To me there’s no real difference between a fortune teller or a fortune cookie and any of the organized religions. They’re all equally valid or invalid, really. And equally helpful.” – Woody Allen

Card no.18: The Moon

'Moon' is the card of dreams, fears and anxiety. Be cautious with the dim moonlight in a dark night sky - It could be the only light source to guide us or an illusion that drags us into the unknown.

“She didn't quite know what the relationship was between lunatics and the moon, but it must be a strong one, if they used a word like that to describe the insane.” ― Paulo Coelho, 'Veronika Decides to Die'.
