Adobe Illustrator Learning process

Adobe Illustrator Experiments
Starting of the three week experiment with Adobe Illustrator. To be honest, I haven't even heard of Illustrator and vectors. So I started of just following my teachers documents and trust the process, I had zero experience with this software. So tutorials were definitely needed. I watch the first tutorial about the basics of software, and after that I did the first follow on tutorial. It was about shapes. Basically just learned how to use it. But my final product looked completely different from the video, and that was intentional. It took way less time then i thought, So i added some words and colours, made it into a yellow version. I don't think its too bad with some basic shape tools. And I know at this moment, it is still quantity over quality.
Here is second and third, Although they look pretty similar, But making them required totally different tools and way. The "LINE" poster didn't take too long, I learnt how to use pen tool with smoothing. Creating blend of lines from two line vector, Also a simple gradient from solid colour to transparent. The "GRADIENT" was about lines with circles, how to repeat and etc, Focused more on the more advanced multipoint gradient. Made it pair with the circle. Just some simple words slapped on it. Wasn't focused on how good it looks too much, it was still to early. Still made it completely different from the tutorial, to keep things interesting and bit more challenging, in order to reinforce the new skill.
The one on the left was a blend from thick to thin lines, then distorted. I went beyond of the scope of the tutorial. Had some fun with multi-layer, contrast and bright colours. Then its the fifth poster, Tried the fluffy effect. It was achieved through "roughen". Again love the bright colours, I did two that was dark. And it amazing to have some contrast. The front was still bit weird, can be worked on bit more.
Bright, simple, elegant, minimal, but full of colours. The one on the left, i learnt blent colours in distorted lines and space. The one on the right looks similar, but was done differently. It used similar tools from the "Blindingly" Poster from last page. Distorted 2d shapes withs colour fillings and blend. I quite like the minimal look.
Above was probably my two favourites from the 10 tutorial posters i did. The poster on the left used to be many cubes, and rounded its corners. It was very colourful in the tutorial, looks nothing like mine. I overly rounded the corners, put single colour shade in with blend. Experimented with different type of background, Randoms words, but the overly stretched texts was learned from EVA. The lower "POSTER XXX" was learned from merch designs, just full of meaningless words, but looks cool and fills the space.
The poster on the right was the opposite, light colours, semi-transparent shapes, outlines and new font style. Cool to experiment with, looks "artistic" and "Lite". I enjoyed these two.
To wrap this tutorial learning experiment up, I made the above poster. 3D effects with ray tracing. Downloaded this font from the internet. Made a weird poster, Creamy background. Contrasting words. I think I learned the basics of illustrator, and was quite fun.
Reverse Engineering 1
The poster on the far left was the existing posters that i would be trying to reverse engineering. And the two version on the right was done by me.

To be honest, this one was quite bad. I am very much not pleased with it. I always want to try making a minimal poster that stands out, communicate, and cool. I think that existing poster did just that. So i would take out the design elements, single main element in the middle, shadows, a slightly blended single colour background that is whiter in the middle to proved contrast to the main element. So I found a old photo cropped it out with tools i learned before, and made the middle poster. But its ugly, I made it as a joke poster. But later on i found the text weird, so i change the text. Then here borns the final which is the one on the right.

The quality very much below my liking. But i would still include it, as failure is an essential part of the journey to success. I think the main issue was with the Photo and font. Although it looks a tiny bit similar to the original, but the font is too skinny with zero power. It has no weight to it. The Photo is too bright and plain, no shadows, contrast and depth. The "logo" above has zero meaning also. Unlike the original, its a branding. Useless, weird and ugly. The Joke text was the only good part. But i am sure that i will improve on the later posters.
Reverse engineering 2
Top Left red Poster is the existing poster, And I rendered the car in my poster with a car simulator game. And took this photo. Lower right is my finished poster.

I reproduced the rough ratio, layout, typography, similar colour schemes and perspective, but changed the car, brand, and title position, made the weight distribution more even in my opinion. Mostly kept the same, as my second try in minimalist but powerful poster. I believe it is much more successful this time. The main elements about this poster is that the object shares the same colour as the back ground. While just shades draws out the object, it would require photo post processing to combine the colour and shades. And i used the skill before from 10 tutorial to cut out the car itself, so that it is an PNG. But unlike the existing poster's car, it has the element of pure red colour. My chosen object is a bit different. it has a red stripe as its livery, And it has been the key recognisable point for this brand. So I added elements of the brand, which is three coloured stripes. To make sure that my poster is showing the Important element of the brand itself also. I also included the three stripes under the brand name. The car was on the left, so i put the name bit more to the right. It would balance the left right weight a bit.

Overall, I think this poster is quite nice, I kept the main idea and elements the same while keeping its own unique brand design. It looks to be a simple poster, But yet it is affective. I wanted to make the poster feel as natural and easy as possible instead of overly-tryhard.

While writing this, I found that in the existing poster, there was selected parts of the car, that has the original colour. That was a element that i almost missed, I really like how it highlighted the focus points of the object. I think i should make one more literation.
Top right is the true final literation. The highlight really makes the poster pop out more, And gives out the important branding. The branding can grab people's attention more.
Reverse engineering 3
Top right poster would be the poster that i will be reverse engineering this time. It is quiet a famous one. Bright and pop colours. Changed the text to make it funnier. I chose to use a photo of myself this time, As i do not feel comfortable posting photos of friends without permission. I also have to be the author of the photo. So in the end, i simply choose a random photo of myself. It was computer processed, i did some post processing manually to adjust shapes. I could smoothen out the outer edge a bit more. But i think it is good enough, also close enough to the existing poster.
Final project
For my final poster, I am choosing a racing movie that i really liked when i was a kid. Called "Need for speed". But before I started, i need to choose the main "characters" from the movie. Below was the most important cars from the movie. It's just that the car on the most left. There were three exact models, but in different colours. Red, White and Grey.
I checked that i have the 3d models of them, so i could render and take photos of them. If i include different colours for the car on the left, there will be five cars to choose in total. But i don't think i will include them all. As it can feel messy and lose the focus.
Above was about testing shading, lighting, angles. And i can render out PNG that has no background.
Above was my ideas about the layout of the poster. Thinking about colourful strips on the poster.
Photo shooting and post processing. Played around with the colour temp, weather, date and time. I almost went for a PNG clip art, but in the end i went for scene shooting. It will take more time, but the results were amazing. They feel like a group of cars now. Shows that they are actually racing. Trying different brightness, the amount of motion blur, Depth of field, shading, shutter speed. The above results took a lot of post process and colour editing, so that they doesn't look fake. I will pick one for me to continue on with my poster.
Top left was me thinking about different ways of including the description. But looks weird due to the "Need for Speed" Title was in italics.  And it looks to be too long, So i edit it out. Then formed the layout on the right.

Below was the final edition of my poster. The text feels a bit weird, but it does the job.  Not too bad looking.
In the end, It was quiet fun. Now I won't feel uncomfortable using Adobe Illustrator now.  It would help out for any future design project.
