A Cracked Glass Negative Photo Restoration

A Group of Walkers/Mountaineers, 1880s (?). Photo by John Thomas (the back row on the right)

This was a commission from a hiking group. I love working with glass negatives because the definition can be so much better, but the downside is the damage. Chips, cracks and sometimes missing shards are common since they're so fragile.

From a glance, everything looks as if it aligns. On closer scrutiny, I realized I'd have to parse and piece back several areas.

I used resizing and perspective shift, sometimes on smaller areas of the damage, to put it back together as closely as possible. Then I repaired the rest of the damage, choosing to leave some damage in the background instead of cleaning it, to keep it in the spirit of the original.
The trickiest bits were trying to get the faces to look natural and keeping the patterns or details of the clothing fluid.
