An isolated town is under a siege from the heavens... Is there any way out?
darkAngel is a brief, narrative-driven game. Drawing on cues from the story, the player will make choices that decide the ultimate fate of the main character, namely by selecting items that will ensure they survive. The game is prototyped in Adobe Animate using ActionScript 3.0 with a resolution of 1280 x 720. Finished, it will include the ability to select, keep, and change items, a running timer, and a button to press when the user is ready to attempt an escape. There will be a few different endings based on their choices.
This is a video of the completed prototype, including an introduction that fills in the main details of the story.
The above video shows an earlier prototype that featured a zoom in and zoom out camera effect when examining objects. It unfortunately didn't integrate well with the rest of the code and needed to be removed, but if it seems it will work well in future versions, the zoom effect may be restored! The heartbeat sound effect in the interface is the same as in the full prototype video (downloaded from Freesound.org, created by .name).
Graphics for darkAngel are a composite. Detailed images of the town of Greenmeadow (such as the one on the left, from Adobe Stock "Road Trip, Silverton Colorado Views" by Pat) were bitmap-traced from images of Silverton, Colorado to better match the art style of the game. Everything else, like the key in the middle and the sequence on the right, was drawn in Adobe Animate.
The animated GIF to the right above is the sequence repeating on Sam's living room TV. Could it be a clue to why everything is happening?
The above is concept art done in Photoshop. To the left is Sam, the protagonist of the game. The player will see through her eyes during the game. To the right is a study of the "angels" hunting down the residents of Greenmeadow. The middle shows one from a distance, with its many eyes closed. The left shows one up close, eyes opened. The right shows the mouth an "angel" has in its middle, nearly imperceptible when closed and seen from afar. Opened, this mouth reveals three rows of teeth.
The "angels" have been known to embrace their victims in order to pull them closer to their mouths. Their sharp claws and wiry arms then hold the unfortunate person in place while the mouth begins to chew... Also, the "angels" typically keep their eyes closed. This, factored in with darkness and distance, can make them resemble the typical concept of an angel. It is to anyone's guess how they fly and move so easily without any eyes open.
