Repeat and Non Directional Design- Monarch Butterfly
Storyboard and Moodboad
Motif Original Image
Motif Drawings
For the motif design, I used pencil tool to sketch out the motif outer lines and details in the wings. I also kept an pencil sketch and coloured th emotif to experiment. Later on, I dissected the motif into little parts and coloured them separately.
Then I combined the parts in different ways so does not neccesarily look like a butterfly. I also created some simple repeat designs to see what the colors would look like in pattern.
Creating a Repeat Design and complementary design
Repeat Design and Complementary Design
For the final repeat design, I combined two different patterns: First one was created by the complex shape created by combining different parts of the butterfly and the second one created by simple pattern made from the catterpiller body outline (background). The color choice in the background and the gold pattern gave my design a vintage look.
For my second colorway design, I experimented with split complementary colorway and complementary colorway. But I liked the complementary colorway better because it highlighted the wing pattern more and the color were gentle and the details of the design were more visible.
Creating a non directional design
For the non directional design, I used my main motif and changed the colors to create a main design that highlights in the centre of the scarf. Then I used the details of the design to create a little flower like structures in different colors. Then I combined the designs to create the final design.
Non-Directional Design
Artist Statement
For my repeat and non-directional design, I chose monarch butterfly as my inspiration for designing a travel collection for young adults who travel internationally for school. The pieces of the collection include luggages, carry bags, purses, fanny packs and scarves. I wanted to give a vintage look to the collection since people are aligning towards vintage fashion. The color pallete I used includes lots of golds, browns, reds and toned down blues. I used only one motif for both my repeat and non-directional designs but I disected the details of the motif and played around with it to attain interesting design pattern. I did not want to make it so obvious that butterfly is the inspiration for the collection so I created abstract designs using the wing pattern and shapes of the butterfly. I created mutiple motifs by arranging the little details of the butterfly in different ways and created muliple repeat designs with it. I also tried different colours in the motif, I wanted to keep some of the original colours of the monarch butterfly and add some vintage tones in the design. For my original color pallete I kept orange and brown in the wings and used yellows and golds in skeleton details to give it an expensive look. I used toned down blues and browns to attain antique and rustic feel. For my non- directional design, I used the same motif to create a flower like shape with the wings, same as repeat design I dissected the details of the original motif to create different designs and patterns. I featured the simultaneous contrast of Hue, Value and Chroma in this design to showcase the affect of background colour on the visibilty of the design. I used same color pallete in both the designs but I changed the placement of the colors in the design to show dominance of the design and affect of colors on the overall look of the design.
