The virtual real-time project "Klabauter" presents an interactive paper-cut installation. Visitors are invited to experience the tale of the Klabauterman, who returns to his place of origin after a shipwreck.
Throughout their interaction with the installation, they will learn details about the fate of the ship and be faced with two main tasks:
to find the Klabauterman's hammer and to repair the extinguished lighthouse. This is depicted as the Klabauterman's final mission. Along the journey, visitors are accompanied by a virtual parrot who guides the way and points out the interactive elements of the installation. Visitors are encouraged to explore the installation and solve the tasks presented to fully experience the story.
HOW?
a simple character embedded within a simple environment
A Klabautermann is a mythological figure from maritime tradition.
It is a small kobold or spirit that lives on board ships. The Klabautermann is genderless and is often seen as a protector of the ship and its crew. However, its appearance is often considered a bad omen, signaling impending disaster or the ship's demise. Traditionally, the Klabautermann only appears to the captain when storms and dangers loom, and its presence is often associated with the imminent risk of the ship capsizing. Its sighting can instill fear and unrest among sailors, as it is regarded as a harbinger of
serious maritime disasters.
