Exercise 3: Type Anatomy and Classification Infographic
For this project, I conducted research on type classifications and anatomy by layering letterforms in various hues and shades. And then diagram the properties of each typeface. The project overall is to pick some letters (three per composition) and assign each a different font (from the list provided). I then need to layer them on each other in various opacities (eight total detailed sketches). From the eight sketches I am to pick two sketches and work on manipulating them further in illustrator. And finally develop two color palettes for my final compositions, as well as labeling the parts of the letters.
After my professor's feedback I'd come to realize that I had a different interpretation for this project. My thought process in the beginning was to create a few sketches and then use those sketches to experiment more on illustrator. Then I applied a multitude of fonts throughout the project, instead of focusing on three fonts in total.
Most of my compositions have a mixture of serifs and sans serif fonts. I also used a blackletter a few times. I wanted to prioritize my work in illustrator because it's easier to manipulate the letters and opacity in the program than it is in a sketch. I really focused on using the same three letters throughout the project. But with heavy emphasis on experimenting with lower and uppercase forms.
My color palette on the left is kind of random. I really love the colors green and purple, and just chose blue to work with them. My "salmon" colored palette was also just a random choice for color. During critique I noticed two of my shades were indistinguishable. And at the end I did my history research on the fonts I decided.
Reflection: I believe there's numerous small things that I could have done differently. I should've followed the instructions more closely. But I still got about the same outcome, my process just reflects the direction I took. Also, I need to focus on three fonts and more detailed exploration in my sketches. And work on making my shades distinguishable on my single-color palette. I will mention I'm currently revising my errors for a resubmission attempt.
