La historia muestra a dos hermanos que viajan junto con sus amigos a Texas con el objetivo de revisar la tumba de uno de sus familiares, la cual, según informes de la radio, había sido profanada. Sin embargo, en el trayecto son atacados por una familia de caníbales. La película fue comercializada como basada en hechos reales para atraer a una audiencia más amplia y actuar como un sutil comentario en la escena política de ese momento; no obstante, aunque el personaje de Leatherface y algunos detalles menores de la historia están inspirados en los crímenes de Ed Gein, su trama es principalmente ficticia.

The story depicts two brothers who travel with their friends to Texas in order to check the grave of one of their relatives, which, according to radio reports, had been desecrated. However, along the way they are attacked by a family of cannibals. The film was marketed as based on true events to appeal to a wider audience and act as a subtle commentary on the political scene at the time; however, although the character of Leatherface and some minor details of the story are inspired by the crimes of Ed Gein, its plot is mainly fictional.
