Midnight Girl: The Chapel

The Chapel is a level in Midnight Girl, a casual 2D adventure game that takes place in France during the Sixties. In this level, the main character Monique visits a monastery where she plans to steal an old underground map of Paris.
The Headless Saint
When zooming in on the chapel wall, we see a headless saint who seems to be holding his own head in his hands. Saints that have been martyred by beheading are sometimes depicted this way, which I find bizarre, yet endlessly fascinating.
The Fireplace
The colors in the fireplace room ranges from a highly saturated orange to a desaturated green. I often use a saturated color to highlight a detail, and then softly fade into a more muted color for less important details.
Next to the fireplace room we have the room with the grandfather clock. I deliberately worked with very cold colors for this room, to contrast the warm colors in the fireplace room.
The Map Room
This is the room where Monique finds the map she's attempting to steal. I'm using a very vertical composition and heavily saturated colors to emphasize the importance of the room. I also use the god ray from the window to lead the player's attention to the map.
The Piano Room
This room is kept mostly in a muted warm color palette, and I use the god ray to direct attention to both the piano and the toolbox. The toolbox is even colored in a contrasting blue color, since I want the player to pay more attention to the toolbox than the piano.
The Bell Ringer
I love working with contrasting features when creating characters. The bell ringer has a strong imposing body, mixed with a submissive pose and a mild facial expression. I gave him extra large triceps, since he's doing a lot of rope pulling.
Midnight Girl is available on PC and Mac. You can find it Steam, where we also have a free demo.
