El 30 de octubre (Devil's Night) en Detroit, el sargento Albrecht se encuentra en la escena de un crimen donde Shelly Webster ha sido golpeada y violada. On October 30 (Devil's Night) in Detroit, Sergeant Albrecht is at a crime scene where Shelly Webster has been beaten and raped. Her fiancé, Eric Draven, lies dead in the street after being stabbed, shot and thrown out the window. The couple planned to get married the next day, on Halloween. When he goes to the hospital with Shelly, Albrecht meets a young woman, Sarah, who says she is his friend and that she is being cared for. Albrecht reluctantly tells her that Shelly is dying.

A year later, a raven touches Eric's tombstone; who wakes up and emerges from his grave. Meanwhile, a low-level street gang, led by T-Bird, is setting fires in the city. Upon returning to his old apartment, now abandoned, Eric experiences flashbacks of T-Bird and his gang (Tin Tin, Funboy and Skank) killing him and Shelly. Eric soon discovers that any wound he receives heals immediately; guided by the raven, he sets out to avenge his and Shelly's murder by killing the perpetrators.
