Ceiling, Altar and Dome

Ceiling
The ceiling of the Chiesa di Sant’Ignazio di Loyola explodes with a dizzying illusion of boundless space. A grand architectural framework creates a sense of receding colonnades and arches. These lead the eye upwards to a brilliant burst of heavenly light where the figure of Saint Ignatius ascends in a blaze of glory. Fleeting earthly details give way to the expansive majesty of the heavens, leaving the viewer in awe.
Altar
Massive organ pipes rise majestically on either side of the apse. Gleaming gold embellishments dance in the light, hinting at the profound sounds the instrument can unleash. Steps lead up to the altar, a place of reverence and ceremony. A gilded tabernacle gleams at its center, a focal point for the prayers and meditations that fill this sacred space. Ornate candlesticks stand sentinel, their flames flickering ever so slightly, casting a warm, inviting light on the meticulously crafted altar.
Dome
The ceiling of the Church of Sant’Ignazio di Loyola in Rome explodes with an illusionistic dome that seems to pierce the heavens. A masterful work of Baroque art by Andrea Pozzo, the dome is actually painted on the flat ceiling. The dome’s underside appears to be coffered with elaborate geometric patterns.  These recede into the distance, creating the illusion of depth. A ring of seemingly three-dimensional statues of saints circles the base of the dome. Light streams through the painted dome from above, casting dramatic highlights and shadows that further enhance the illusion. The oculus, or opening at the very top of the dome, seems to open directly onto a bright sky.
