Pagliòlo is the name of the flooring that covers the inner bottom of boats and is generally composed of a series of wooden planks. The idea of this furniture was born by observing the fast and elegant boat taxis whizzing along the canals in my city: Venice.
The rhythmic succession of modular planks has enabled me to design a bookcase and a coffee table that do not need a supporting structure, since the planks act both as a structure and external cladding.
The flatting (that is the polishing and sealing) of the okumè planks is the same as that used for motorboats; it is meant to create the same mood and allure of Venetian taxis. The simple design makes the overall project contemporary and original, not a mere exercise in imitation of a style.
