Sally McRae The Grand Slam of 200s poster
My YouTube feed over the festive period offered up to me a series of incredible documentaries (made by @tylermccain and @drewbdarby) showing Sally McRae's attempt at The Grand Slam of 200s. I watched in complete awe as one of the world's greatest ever ultra runners bared her every agonising move to cover these vast distances. The pain, the torment, the mental gymnastics and the sheer will to keep moving was just so inspiring to watch with what she went through it left an indelible mark on me.
Time after time I thought 'Well that's that then, time to call it day.' Did she? No way. You see Sally is not your average person, anything but and with pretty much no skin left on her heels moved on from aid station to aid station just to see how deep she could dig and how much she could 'Choose Strong' (the namesake of her wonderful podcast with husband Eddie).
When quitting is not even an option on the table it is surprising to see just how far one can go and Sally even went as far as to not only complete all 4 x 200 mile races in 5.5 months but come in first female in the Moab 240 and win the Triple Crown. I get goose bumps just thinking of what it must have been like to cross that final finish line and celebrate.
So I set about trying to capture all of the data and elevations and reached out to the wonderful Tyler McCain to see if I could purchase one of the images used on the documentaries. He very kindly offered a choice of 13 and the winner was the one that seemed to sum up the struggle the most, regardless of the race she was in.
This has been one of the most moving infographic posters I've done to date and even though I wasn't really counting it took as long as just 1 of these 4 races to put together. I'm so glad that Sally and Eddie have given it the thumbs up and an A1 version is at the printers ready to work it's way across the seas as a reminder of what was accomplished. @yellowrunner you are one incredible athlete, person and inspiration to the humble rest of us.
