Emerge entertainment approached me with the task of creating a series of images that visualized the concepts of their musical 1931, which was then in the writing stages. We worked with the writer and producer to strategize the portrayal of particular characters through art direction and story. We chose to focus on the lead character “Ruby Devine” — a famous American actress from New York who arrives in the country fleeing debts and the Great Depression. The three images tell the story of her arrival and the hype surrounding it. The images were applied as street posters and billboards that functioned as mock announcements. A 1930s DC3 aircraft was hired and used along with the theatre company’s costumes, props and house venue to result in a evocative but relatively
low cost shoot.
