The incredible memoir of a soldier who survived an IED explosion, spent 48 days in a coma, underwent 50 skin graft surgeries, and battled PTSD to emerge with a renewed confidence in the goodness of God and a deeper love for his wife who stood beside him through it all.
Shilo had just participated in a photo-essay project by David Jay. The project began with David's dramatic, unfiltered photos of Shilo and his scars. As a designer, it was my goal to present this imagery in a way that was honoring the Shilo and his story.
Below: First-round comps for Steel Will. Some members of the team were concerned that Shilo's injuries would be too upsetting for the market so I developed an alternative concept. In the end, we felt strogly that it would be a disservice to not have him pictured on the cover.
