Community Q BBQ
Sometimes small websites are big projects

Scott Banks of BAD Studio designed, programmed and animated this 7-page website for an incredible local Barbecue joint, Community Q BBQ. Typically with a website, even small ones, over half of the budget is allocated to development.

“There’s a lot that goes on behind-the-scenes that allows everything to run smoothly,” says Digital Art Director Scott Banks of BAD Studio. “Unfortunately, this limitation has really effected the look of most sites today. Things now have a more 'templated' look typical of a WordPress or Joomla developed site. But they don’t have to be that way.”

Most websites rely heavily on CSS for styling, and end up with a very blocky clean look. This site took a 90-degree turn and focused on the art. In fact over 90% of the $7,500 cost spent on the project (the client only paid $2,000) was used to create everything from custom lettering and illustration to fake flyers and textured backgrounds. Everything was hand-made, to reflect the authenticity of this real BBQ joint.

“I know we didn't make money on this project,” continues Banks. “But I feel getting your hands dirty and showing other ways of thinking about website design is important. Sometimes it’s just a labor of love.”
