Art 135 - Project 02: Book Covers
The assignment was to create three book covers for one book. The first would be handmade, designed with physical materials. The second to be a typography poster, made with the type to be the focus of the cover. The third and final cover was to be a cover of our choice, being made however we want. The only thing was for them to all use a bit of a creative strategy.
My book of choice was Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.
My handmade Frankenstein book cover.
For my handmade cover, I started off by crumpling up a piece of construction paper. I then used bathroom cleaner to stain parts of the paper. I used glue sticks, markers, pastels, and highlighters to add colors and textures to the paper. I then stitches across the top of the paper and stapled it together. Upon uploading the Cover, I corrected some of the colors and added the type.

The poster is meant to feel like the head of Frankenstein's Monster, with the paper being his skin with the stitching and staples like the stitching and staples across the Monsters head in the majority of media.
My typography Frankenstein cover.
For my typography cover, I started out by seeing how the word Frankenstein looked made out of entirely different fonts. After much tweaking, I eventually decided to create my own letters. I designed them one by one, then added a shadow to them, a gradient background, and the authors name.

The word is an amalgamation of different letters, much like how Frankenstein's Monster is an amalgation of different people's body parts.
My designer's choice Frankenstein cover.
For my designer's choice, I went several different directions before landing on my final cover. I took several images and combined them to create the school on the hilltop with the lightning in the sky. I then removed the color and eddited the different shades, before adding the rest of the cover and adding a drop shadow to said rest of cover. I applied a grain texture to the green cover to make it feel more papery, and then I added a strip to put the title and author on.

The school is dark and lacking off color, both being reminiscent of classical book covers, and representing the depression and dispair that filled Victor Frankenstein's life after creating his monster at school.
