300 Sketches - Luca Lin

300 Sketches
Here are my 300 sketches for the first assignment. The sketches range between 2D and 3D objects, people and just random things with no explanation. My 300 sketches are split into three sections:
Part 1: messing around by myself
Part 2: learning to sketch properly
Part 3: gaining confidence
Part 1: Messing Around By Myself
Starting off, it’s clear to see that my sketches were very low level; I had messy lines (instead of the preferred singular straight confident line), I would mess up proportions and perspectives and overall, everything just looked like a mess.

Initially, I had wanted to specialise my 300 sketches on interior and exterior designs but quickly found that i lacked the necessary skills (and I also got bored).

I quickly transitioned to basic pieces of furniture to simplify things.

Once bored, I transitioned to drawing people (faces and bodies) as that is what I had greater confidence in and to be fair, what I enjoyed more.
I also wanted to learn how to draw female anatomy as I had limited experience in that area so many sketches will be of such.

The sketches are much clearer but the lines were still scratchy and unconfident and the proportions were still often messed up.

To be fair, I didn’t think it was an issue for the first hundred and two sketches until our tutorial with Hans in which he taught we how to properly sketch (using boxes) and clean up my lines.
Part 2: Learning to Sketch Properly
As a class activity, our professor Hans had us sketch one of his guitars and also volunteered to give any willing students a ‘recap’ on how to sketch properly which I gladly took up.

Apart from the occasional character or random sketch, Part 2 would consist mainly of 2D and 3D objects drawn using the newly learnt ‘box method’.

My main issue here would still be the unconfident, scratchy lines that I had started to take notice of and try eradicate - which was harder than I thought but I persisted.
Part 3: Gaining Confidence
I gradually started to gain confidence, hopefully evident in the cleaner lines and more distinct objects. I also recreated previous sketches to monitor improvement.
Additionally, I continued my people sketches and practised sketching in that aspect in which, with my newfound confidence and cleaner lines, I also saw an aesthetic improvement.

For the rest of the sketches, 266 and onward, it would be a mixture of 2D and 3D objects as well as people.
In the end:
My sketches have definitely improved: cleaner and softer lines, better proportions and overall clearer sketches.

To be fair, sketching random 2D and 3D objects isn’t what I particularly like but I believe that they are the basics and fundamentals that are necessary to become competent at first before progressing towards harder and more elaborate sketches.

Additionally, improving at sketching 2D and 3D objects improved my character sketches, which I enjoy much more.

I will continue to practise sketching and learning and improving :)
