"MY ROOM" PROJECT
─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ──
For this project I got a character assigned in a certain style, and I had to create a room in Blender for the character. I got Steampunk assigned, and I was really happy with it since I've been interested in the Steampunk style for a long time.

Here you'll be able to review what steps I followed and how I got to this final result above.
  STEP 1: BOARDS  ★ ⚙
I started by creating boards. First I created a board for the character, what my vision was of a SteamPunk character.
CHARACTER REFERENCE BOARD:
Then I proceeded by making a styleboard, which created a clearer view of what the room was going to look like.
THE STYLEBOARD:
  STEP 2: CHARACTER ★ ⚙
I'm also a writer, and for this project I decided to use the Steampunk character that I've already created for my next book. I wrote a summary of my book, but the summary is more focused on the character itself than the book, because this project is not about my writing. But I did have to include some backstory, otherwise it would've been too hard to understand her role/purpose.
THE SHORT STORY / SUMMARY:
Nedgyth is a girl who spends her time in the afterlife as a clockmaker. The afterlife is a game, and she manages one of the levels. In her workplace/room she thinks of ways to make her level more complicated, because no one’s supposed to succeed through all of the levels. And so each creator in the game who owns a level works hard to keep their level almost impossible to finish. If a player/human doesn’t succeed and fails on one of the levels, it’s game over and they’ll get locked up in a dark void, far below all of the levels.

The ruler of the afterlife creates new roles for levels in the afterlife, and picks out one of the bodies in the dark void that would be fitted for the role. He transforms the lifeless body into a whole new character using potions and machines, and then the person gets placed into the assigned level.
Levels and roles keep on being added, which makes the game harder to finish every single time.

And so the cycle repeats.

If one of the game creators reach a certain amount of people that haven’t succeeded in their level, they have officially finished their task and are given a choice. They can either be sent back to life, or be buried in the void and experience a painless and peaceful death. So if their level is too easy to beat, they can be stuck as a game-creator who keep on working to kill innocent people for eternityNedgyth keeps on working hard in her office/room (the room I created for this project), in desperate need of making the level harder to beat. She sits at her desk all the time, creating prototypes for new obstacles or thinking of ways to improve the obstacles she already has. Her dream is to be sent back to life and make up for all of her mistakes she has made throughout her life.
  STEP 3: PROCESS ★ ⚙
I'm diving right into it by saying that I forgot to take process screenshots. I didn't realise that that was important to review the process of this project. But because I don't have that many screenshots, I'm going to try to explain every step I took as clearly as possible.

I follow a youtube tutorial on making a little bedroom in Blender, with that tutorial I was able to set up the walls and learn how to make a floor out of wooden planks. I eventually also duplicated those planks and put them against the wall for a more cozy effect. The tutorial also explained how to make certain furniture for the bedroom, but I didn't follow those steps. I created my own furniture.

I extruded the walls so that I could have multiple floors in the room. I wanted Nedgyth to have a little sleeping place, a place with a bookshelf and a place where her desk is and where she can focus on her work. I created those floors and made sure to add a ladder for easy access to each floor.

I followed a tutorial on how to make a gear but I failed, because I couldn't get rid of some faces. But it did look decent in the end. I also decided to create some pipes for an extra steampunk effect, I also followed a tutorial on those. I used the same pipe in different angles and sizes, so it looked like different ones.
Next I created fences, a mirror above the desk, a chair, the base for the bookshelf and upgraded the ladder. I made all fo those myself, but for the mirror I had to look for a tutorial, since I wasn't sure how to make it so reflective. Apart from that I also fixed up the gears a little, and made them bronze. I duplicated that one pipe and put it in multiple places around the room, and also gave it a golden shiny texture/material.
Next I made the mirror a little smaller so that the pipe would fit properly, and I could also add a gear on that spot. I also created the bedframe, which was sadly not captured well in this screenshot. I experimented with modeling and was able to create a bed by myself. This was the last screenshot I had before the final product, so the rest I will be explaining with words.
Here is my final result again. I edited the fences, to give the room a calmer atmosphere instead of the poles being pressed together tightly. I created various books with simple shapes and placed those in the bookshelf, and also a few on the desk. I created an open book, I'm pretty proud of it since I didn't follow an instruction on making it and I think it looks pretty good. I also placed an open book on the nightstand. I placed the plant in the room that we made in another class.

In Sketchfab I experimented with effects and lightning, which gave it a really cool, cozy and dark atmosphere.
  STEP 4: REFLECTION ★ ⚙
I really enjoyed this project. I learned a lot about Blender and also about color matching and interior. I was also really happy with the theme I got assigned. I feel like the result is great for a basic beginner steampunk room, if I was more advanced and experienced with Blender I think I would've been able to make it look even cooler. I might recreate it once I have more Blender experience.

Overall, I really enjoyed this project and I learned a lot.

What will you do differently next time?
