Above & Below Sandwich Café is a fictional local restaurant specializing in fresh sandwiches and mushroom dishes. Their day menu consists of traditional comfort food with a home-cooked flair. I made all of the illustrations in Adobe Illustrator and designed the menu in InDesign.
At night, the Below section of the café opens up, a dance club and bar for hanging out while the city sleeps. The table tent accompanying piece features hours, admissions fee, and some weekly menu items to order up.
Red with a yellow/blue tint paired with cyan has been on trend for a while, so I thought I'd use the colors to differentiate between the Above and Below sections of the piece. I used Montserrat, a clean sans-serif, and a hexagonal motif in my illustrations and shapes. The logo is minimalist and fun to market toward an adventurous crowd. The illustrations were colored using a predesigned palette to keep the colors conforming with one another.
My initial inspiration for the project was Red Raven's board game Above and Below, which shares a similar art style and color palette. I was particularly inspired by Megaland (another Red Raven staple) which has cards featuring shops that I imagined were similar to my own fictional café. You can see the two designs compared to one another. I even styled the table tent to look a bit like the roof of the sandwich shop.
Overall I'm happy with how the project turned out. I hope to score some good grades on it in my class, and I hope you were inspired by my designs to go make something great of your own!
