PBL Puzzle
The PBL Puzzle is designed for middle school aged students to develop a better understanding of the importance and the use of Project Based Learning. In doing so, PBL Puzzle is designed to be challenging to put together (each piece is unique), and upon completion, represent the Engineering Process.
As a future educator, the goal is not only to encourage students to problem solve but to allow them the opportunity to "fell fast, often, and forward".
Process of Designing PBL Puzzle
PBL was designed in Fusion 360 to scale so that the file could also be laser cut and used in a real classroom. When designing the puzzle, the general layout and main pieces depicting the Engineering Process (Define Problem, Identify Constraints, Brainstorm Solutions, Select Approach, Prototype, and Test) were sketched and extruded first (images above).
Next, each unique piece was individual designed using spline tools to curve and shape the pieces. This was intended to be challenging to assemble.
The last steps in creating the PBL Puzzle was applying the wooden and paint appearances that gives the Engineering Design Process a pop of color (depicted above). This was to emphasize the purpose of the puzzle in understanding that problem solving, through each step, is part of the design process.
