The portrait of the animal - Golden Turtle contest

THE PORTRAIT OF THE ANIMAL
The idea behind the project is a griffon vulture, a rare species of vulture eagle, imposing size, with wings spanning up to three meters. The role of the griffon vulture in the ecosystem's food chain is unique and irreplaceable. It feeds only on dead animals, thus preventing the spread of infections and carrying out "natural recycling". About 30 years ago, this rare species was near extinction. In 1994, the Fund for the Protection of Birds of Prey was established in Serbia and opened the feeding place Manastirina, where they continuously feed on the bodies of dead animals. Thanks to regular feeding, the number of griffon vultures increased to 450-500 individuals. The Griffon vulture is the last species from the subfamily of vultures that has taken place in Serbia to this day and it has national, cultural, educational, economic, sanitary, and aesthetic significance. The characteristic head of the griffon vulture is unique and is displayed on the coats of arms of medieval Serbia. In Serbia, various legends and beliefs add to the griffon vulture of supernatural power, and by them, it represents the messenger between humans and gods.
