We teamed up with our friends at Mycoworks and helped them show the process of their idea - making Reishi from Mycelium. The whole idea is based on showing the process using the tray where the main processes take place. All the simulations were mostly created in Houdini. In some settings a proxy workflow was used to show the highest possible level of detail. The main challenge was to show the growth of mycelium as artistically and accurately as possible. The end result was a film that is primarily used as an explanatory film, but also for social media purposes.

We tried playing with materials and the tray right from the beginning. It was quite important to not only show processes, but design a sophisticated look with focus on detail as well.

Point-based solvers were used for the Mycelium's growth. Combining it with hair systems and procedural growth, the Mycelium growth was born.
