Permaculture Principles Applied: Dune

PERMACULTURE PRINCIPLES APPLIED : DUNE
BRIEF
This project required me to redesign the icons for the 12 principles and 3 ethics of permaculture. After completing this, I designed an infographic poster as an “environment” for my icons. The objective of the redesign was to apply permaculture principles elsewhere, creating a new “theme”. I chose to center mine around the book “Dune” by Frank Herbert.

PERMACULTURE:
the development of agricultural ecosystems intended to be sustainable and self-sufficient.

APPLICATION TO DUNE
At its core, “Dune” advocates living in harmony with nature and its resources. The native people of Arrakis, the Fremen, have adapted to the harsh climate and deeply respect the desert. The Fremen revolve life around the desert, water, and the sandworm. Their practices align with permaculture's focus on working with, not against, nature's systems. In addition, "Dune" emphasizes the consequences of exploiting resources, such as spice. Political affairs, ecological appreciation, sustainable living, and human stewardship all tie to permaculture philosophy in this narrative.

ICONS
The basis of each of my icons was a rounded rectangle. I chose this shape for aesthetics, as well as uniformity in my icons. I tried to make my icons as geometrical and abstract as possible, to give a more "sci-fi" feel. Throughout my design process, I made sure to include circles, rays, crosshatches, lines, etc. I reuse symbols like the House Atreides Hawk in many icons (ex. design from patterns to details, use small and slow solutions, obtain a yield, fair share). I do this to achieve unity in my designs.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
I did extensive research into the plot, background, author, and meaning of “Dune”. It was important that I really understood the book before going into this project. I also made sure to research permaculture, understanding the principles was integral to the process. For each principle, I allotted its new “Dune” meaning, then began brainstorming designs.
Visually I was inspired by 70s/80s design, space, video game design, technology, and the many variations of the “Dune” book covers. I looked to pinterest for fan art and movie stills.

IDEA SKETCHES
I sketched out each icon using references from the movie or internet. Some icons were not sketched, instead I created them straight on illustrator. I found that this helped me make things more abstract and precise.
