The Grasshopper— A Poetic Retelling

Languages shape our perception of various things and is reiterated through stories. Considering that we live in cities and we often don’t interact with animals, the language used in popular narratives shapes our perception and belief of animals.

This visual narrative, seeks to retell the story of the Grasshopper from the Greek fabulist Aesop's, The Ant and the Grasshopper. The fable leaves us with the moral that one must be hardworking like the ant, so that one doesn't starve like the lazy grasshopper through winter. However, contrary to this, research on the life cycle of a grasshopper shows equal challenges for its survival. The Greek myth on the other hand portrays the grasshopper chirping as a symbol for unrequited love from the goddess of dawn, Aurora.

The images in the narrative combine poetry retelling the tale of the grasshopper, along with elements of text as image, that are drawn from excerpts of 'The Ant and the Grasshopper', the Greek myth of the Grasshopper and Mary Oliver's poem— The Summer Day from her collection of poems, Devotions.
