Visible Movement

Visible Movement is an exploration the constraints created by car-centric design in cities. By designing the city for personal vehicles rather than for human powered movement or mass transit, the fabric of urban life is confined to the paths set down by city planners and traffic engineers.
This project uses alternative mapping methods to visualize the relative lack of space for pedestrians and the hostility of roadscapes. Taking an auto-ethnographic approach to research, I record my experiences walking through Montreal with field notes, sketches, and photographs. These recordings were used to create a series of fabric patches depicting scenes from my walks, sewn with denim and high-visibility vinyl. These patches were then used to create a speculative collection of wearable items using these motifs and materials, embedding the imagery of pedestrian insecurity and road safety into the things we wear while walking.
