Amphibian Eyes

I strongly believe that fantasy is a powerful tool to draw attention to the need to conserve our natural species.

Despite centuries of research and exploration, it is estimated that more than 80 percent of the Earth's species remain undiscovered. But for amphibians, at least half of the known species are now considered threatened and could become extinct. These problems are also faced by species we don't even know about!

This is a tragedy on a global scale. However, in my experience I have learned that trying to discuss this issue from the depths of the problem can lead to anxiety and frustration. So, imagining species, drawing them and creating stories around them is one way I have found to start a fun and enjoyable environmental education activity, which then turns into a discussion about what species in the world actually exist and have been discovered and what each of us can do to protect them. In this way, it is possible to learn about a complex problem from a creative and constructive angle.

This is why I love to use fantasy for environmental education and communication!

In this project I drew imaginary amphibian eyes to start a conversation about some serious conservation issues! To help amphibians, you can find more information and get involved at savethefrogs.com
