WHITE

Old age is an on-going concern, which affect us all but that we try in vain to forget. I have dedicated this series of photographs to the pristine white hair, which does not evoke, in my view, the decrepitude but the life in progress. The white hair can be seen as the ultimate self-awareness of one's age. However, I believe it is more than just a sign of ageing. It is another stage within life which awaits to be experienced.

I have decided to take these photographs from behind the subject whilst they are walking forward, paying particular attention to the beautifully healthy white hair. In this direction, I am able to walk in the footsteps of the elderly and look forward as they are doing. In turn, this enables me to sympathise with the subject on their journey through life and possibly share what they are feeling.
Taking a photograph in this direction also conveys a sense of motion, energy, vitality and the subject being active in their life. On the contrary, to place the focus on the front side of the subject would generate a more static image and give rise to a feeling of inactivity, weakness and frailty. Furthermore, it would focus the viewers attention on the subjects characteristics such as their wrinkles, fragility and posture. This may have led the viewer into feeling the opposite of what I am aiming to portray in these photographs.

What I am fundamentally attempting to awaken, in my work, is that of an optimistic view of the elderly’s existence.
