INDONESIAN FOLKLORE° —  Rawa Pening
Central Java, Semarang

This is a folktale that tells the story of the formation of a vast swamp in Central Java (2,670 hectares).
The story begins with a couple who have supernatural powers. They are known as Ki Hajar and Nyai Selakanta. Long story short, the child they had conceived was born in the form of a dragon. This child was named Baru Klinthing.

Once upon a time, Baru Klinthing meditated on Mount Telomoyo by wrapping his entire body around the mountain. Unfortunately, there were Pathok villagers who were hunting and did not see the whole form of Baru Klinthing. When they saw Baru Klinthing's tail, they gathered together to cut and eat the meat.

Long story short, Baru Klinthing was transformed into a human form. Then he came to the villagers and gave them a curse of a spring that gushed swiftly and endlessly. And that spring is now Rawa Pening.

From the legendary folklore, I presented it as an illustration for a fairy tale book. In this illustration,
I tried to show the figure of Baru Klinthing in the form of dragons and humans as an important point in this illustration.
