Corn-Snack Packaging Design Process

Corn-Snack Packaging Design Process
Here's a peek at some work I did on corn-snack packaging for a university module on product development,
in collab with an industry client – from the very first doodle to the design that made the cut for the final presentation. Dive into how I mixed creativity with strategy to cook up a design that's as tasty to the eyes as the snack is to your taste buds.
Main Considerations (post research):
Following our primary & secondary research, we formed 3 main considerations when designing our packaging –
Our packaging had to be Resealable, Realistic, and Recognisable!
Here are some base sketches that were done for layout experimentation by referencing existing packaging.
Key: Tangible Packaging = Physical Component
Flat Design = Graphic Component
Graphic Component – Design Variation Type 1: Continuity
Focusing on continuity of the client’s current aesthetic & brand identity, I designed a chipmunk mascot, using colours of similar tone as well. Additional details would be the cutout which allows reveals of the snack within,
a recurring theme in our mockups.

Graphic Component – Design Variation Type 2: Breakaways
These variations move away from what the client's products currently look like.
On the top left, a more modern, minimalistic design with a neutral palette without a chipmunk.
Next to it, a more abstract version of the chipmunk that focuses on the snack inside,
And then below, a more bold 3D style which offers a more unique textural edge.

Graphic Component – Design Variations Type 3: MishMashes
Staying true to the client’s vibrant colour palette, it incorporates the chipmunk in a slightly different style.
The top 2 were created with the ziplock physical component in mind.
The bottom was adapted for the “wet tissue” component, where it’s meant to peel open at the start of the corn.

Final Design (post client feedback):
Due to client's preferences, the animal mascot theme was reworked.
In replacement, characters resembling the shapes and flavours of the snack were designed instead.
Final Mock-up(s):
Thank you for your time! :)
