For Creative Project One, I chose to make an advertisement for the upcoming game,
Spider-Man 2 for the PS5. This is an advertisement made to get people excited for the game and buy it when it comes out or even pre order it right away. This ad was designed to be one of the daily posters that Insomniac Games makes for Spider-Man 2. These ads are shown digitally on the PlayStation store and on social media. Some of the Spider-Man 2 posters are even displayed in Times Square, New York. All of the posters are made to be displayed digitally. This poster was loosely inspired by the 2008 Spider-Man game by the name of Spider-Man: Web Of Shadows. That game’s cover featured Spider-Man with his arms crossed and with each arm featuring characters from the game. The audience for the ad would be Spider-Man fans, PlayStation owners or people thinking of purchasing a PlayStation 5.

Techniques Used

Technique 1 - Masking: One of the main techniques I used all throughout the poster
was masking. Most of the objects in the poster are masked out from their background. I used a couple different selection types to make the masks also. For the background with the black suit around the cut, I used a color range to get most of the red of Spider-Man’s mask and then went in and refined the selection. For the characters, I used the select subject tool and then went in and selected everything it missed and deselected unneeded parts of the background using the lasso tool and polygonal lasso tool. After everything had its base mask, I put everything together and went back into the mask and using a white or black brush refined it further. One difficult part of masking for this project was the lightning on Miles’ hand, I had to mask that separately because the original selection would not pick it up. I used a color range selection to get most of the fist and lighting and then refined using the lasso and further refined it by using the brush tool on the mask itself.

Technique 2 - Blending Modes: Another prominent tool I used in this project was
blending modes on additional layers for the characters. For Black Suit Spiderman, his photo was dark and blended in too much with the suit around the city, so to highlight him better I used a clipping mask with a color blend mode and then I used the colors from the classic cartoon of black suit spiderman, a dual tone of red on one side and light blue on the other which fit very well with the surroundings of the city. Another way I used a blend mode was to make light reflections from Miles’ lightning on Peter and Venom. I made clipping masks with vivid light on both Venom and Peter and drew in light yellow and orange to replicate a glow on both of them to highlight them better and to make it more realistic with their proximity to Miles.

Technique 3 - Adjustment layers: As far as adjustment layers, I used curves on each of
the characters to make their lighting match the background a bit better. Each of the characters had their own curve layer to change their specific lighting. For the curves, I made only very minor changes because the characters had very good lighting to begin with. I also used a hue and saturation layer on Venom to make his white lighting more blue to better reflect the lighting of the city surrounding him. I enjoyed working on this project and I am very proud of the final product. I worked hard to perfect every aspect and detail of the poster. My aim was to make something bold, exciting, pleasing to look at, intriguing without being overly complicated, and to serve the purpose of getting the attention of the audience it targets.
