Principles and approaches of Vancouverism

Vancouverism is a philosophy, an approach – perhaps a discipline – that allows city builders to create dense, urban communities that are more functional, more cost-efficient, more sustainable, and more livable – communities that work and that people enjoy.

“Vancouverism is characterized by tall, but widely separated, slender towers interspersed with low-rise buildings, public spaces, small parks and pedestrian-friendly streetscapes and facades to minimize the impact of a high density population.”

As a favourite on the worlds most livable cities, 'Principles and approaches of Vancouverism' gathers together the most prominent planners, architects, administrators and political leaders who were instrumental in bringing the form to life. They have formed the Exporting Vancouverism Alliance with an eye to sharing Vancouverism’s most successful ingredients. And AECOM is committed, with this publication and ongoing efforts to stand in support.
In researching this project I noted the techniques used by urban planners in their drawings to denote landscapes, trees, concrete, sand etc. Initially, I planned to develop my own set of textures but a conversation with our own urban planners at AECOM lead me to the build-in textures inside of Adobe Illustrator that they used when rendering their urban designs digitally.

The AECOM brand uses a single font, so I used the letter forms to mask the different  urban planner textures and then overlapped them, paying attention to have drifferent but contrasting textures above and below, as well as overlapping in our corporate colours. Altogether there are 30 different textures.

Together with the fabulous photography from AECOM Photographer, David Lloyd I'm very pleased with the result :)
