FlexiScan: Empowering Quick Customization for OT's

FLEXISCAN
RESEARCH
In the course of my research, I conducted two in-depth interviews and administered a comprehensive survey. I had the privilege of engaging with two seasoned Occupational Therapists who boast extensive experience in the field. Their collective expertise spans various facets of occupational therapy, and they have witnessed the integration of cutting-edge technologies into their practice. Notably, both therapists highlighted the remarkable growth in the adoption of 3D mapping technologies within their industry.

Presently, 3D mapping and scanning predominantly occur during in-clinic visits. This practice is influenced by several factors, most notably the cost and size constraints associated with the existing 3D scanners. These devices are prohibitively expensive, bulky, and impractical for use during home visits.

COMMON THEMES
In my research, I discovered many critical challenges related to assistive technologies:

Affordability: These life-changing devices come with a hefty price tag, often tens of thousands of dollars. Maintenance and repairs add to the financial burden.

Timely Delivery: Patients typically wait four weeks or more to receive their assistive devices. Custom parts, if damaged, can exacerbate this delay.

These insights guided my final design process, emphasizing the need for accessible and efficient solutions.

PROJECT ITERATION + DEVELOPMENT
INITIAL CONCEPT
At the beginning of the design process, several initial concepts were conceived and critiqued. There were many different aspects of each of these concepts that ended up becoming influential to the final design.
REVISED CONCEPT
After going back and forth between various different designs this was the final product.
