Conhecida como “Bienal da Guernica”, a 2º edição da Bienal de Arte de São Paulo, realizada entre dezembro de 1953 e fevereiro de 1954 no Parque Ibirapuera, é reconhecida como a bienal mais marcante já realizada. A edição contou com a presença da obra mais conhecida de Pablo Picasso denominada “Guernica”, de 1937. O evento estende-se até o ano seguinte em comemoração ao 4º Centenário da cidade de São Paulo, ocupando dois pavilhões projetados por Oscar Niemeyer: o Palácio dos Estados (atual Pavilhão das Culturas Brasileiras) e o Palácio das Nações (atual Museu Afro Brasil).
Com quase o dobro de obras em relação com a edição anterior, o evento contou com apoio de 712 artistas de 33 países contendo, ao total, 3.374 obras expostas na Bienal, trabalhos de artistas como Paul Klee, Edvard Munch, Brancusi, Alfredo Volpi, Mondrian, Alexander Calder, Manabu Mabe, Aldemir Martins, entre outros.

Known as the “Guernica Biennial”, the 2nd edition of the São Paulo Art Biennial, held between December 1953 and February 1954 in Ibirapuera Park, is recognized as the most remarkable biennial ever held. The edition featured the best-known work by Pablo Picasso called “Guernica”, from 1937. The event continues until the following year in celebration of the 4th Centenary of the city of São Paulo, occupying two pavilions designed by Oscar Niemeyer: the Palace of States (current Pavilion of Brazilian Cultures) and the Palace of Nations (current Afro Brasil Museum).
With almost double the number of works compared to the previous edition, the event had the support of 712 artists from 33 countries, containing, in total, 3,374 works exhibited at the Biennale, works by artists such as Paul Klee, Edvard Munch, Brancusi, Alfredo Volpi, Mondrian, Alexander Calder, Manabu Mabe, Aldemir Martins, among others.
