Recreating The (Extra) Ordinary

I was delighted to work on this commission for Mubi and their stunning magazine Notebook issue 4. The feature is about The Foley Lab , an award-winning studio in Wicklow run by co-owners Caoimhe Doyle and Jon Reynolds. The studio uses home-crafted and hand-operated sound-generating props and objects to conjure up finely detailed and natural-sounding sounds for Film and Tv.

1 WATERMELON - Blood pumping and other gore.

2 HOT WATER BOTTLE - Screeching tyres.

3 POWER BOOTS - John Snow walking on stone.

4 HORSES’ HOOVES - Horses trotting and cantering.

5 GLOVES WITH PAPERCLIPS - Dogs footsteps.

6 FEATHER DUSTERS - Birds in flight.

7 CELERY - Legs breaking.

8 DEER SKIN WITH PASTA INSIDE - Necks breaking.

9 HINGE - Creaking doors.

10 ROLLED-UP NEWSPAPER - Blows to the head.

11 CORNSTARCH IN A PILLOWCASE - Footsteps in the snow
