Anti-Hedgehog Battle Mecha

Illustration
I was really excited to be invited to participate in the 8-Bit and Beyond 2 art show at Bottleneck Gallery in Brooklyn, NY. When asked to illustrate any video game character/concept ever, I was torn between a lot of great choices, but ended up on Robotnik. His character would provide me a chance to create a cutaway/cross-section illustration featuring one of his crazy contraptions to catch Sonic. I had a lot of fun creating for him a new robotic monstrosity to operate and terrorize Sonic.

This has become an 19 x 25" screenprint (signed/numbered edition of 50) on French Paper's Pop Tone Banana Split stock with only 3 inks applied. Sales have just went live. You can purchase one HERE.

After a lot of sketching and mocking up what the mecha would look like, I finally took it to tracing paper for a large state, and then to final in pencil. After the pencils were finished on Bristol board, instead of inking here (which I ususally do) I scanned in the pencils and took the work to Illustrator. I wanted to have a consistent, clean line weight throughout since this was almost a technical, cross-section drawing.
The following shots show how the final prints turned out great. An awesome shop called The Half and Half in Columbia, SC printed these with a very good turn-around time and high-quality as well. They also did a good job printing all of the small halftones perfectly as you'll see.
Thanks for checking it out! One final shot of early tracing paper sketch and final print on my drawing board.
