Initial Statement
For as long as I can remember, I’ve always found making art as a confidential way to express myself and my most inner thoughts and feelings. Whenever I felt like words failed me, or weren’t enough to transmit what I wanted to say, I used to always draw. I was constantly sketching drawings of mainly me and my family, my mom, my dad, my grandmothers. Throughout the years, that passion only grew stronger. It wasn’t until my junior year of highschool where I realized that I could explore that passion further, which brought me to the use of technology.
As I’ve always known that I am somewhat of a perfectionist, the implementation of technological skills allowed me to be more thorough and precise in my work. I enjoyed the practicality of it, and being able to portray almost exactly the idea that I had envisioned. Coming from parents who are both licensed in Computer Science, and also being born into the technological world myself, the use of technological equipment has never been an obstacle for me, and it, in fact, turned into my biggest tool for creating art. During these years I also remember starting to see works of other artists and being amazed by their techniques and inspirations, which is how I decided to keep improving my skills.
During my two IB years, I also came across inspiring works of artists such as the Peruvian painter Fernando de Szyszlo, and Hendrick Goltzius, both of whom inspired some of my own pieces. I was deeply captivated by Szyszlo’s ability to express such powerful stories and emotions with simplistic shapes and a strategic use of lights and shadows. Goltzius, on the other hand, fascinated me with his meticulous traces and attention to detail, representative of the art style of his time.
Since then, art has always helped me to connect with my most sensible and inner self. It has allowed me to get to know myself better, and bring out those things that I always viewed as a weakness and found ways to portray those aspects about myself into my own works. Ideas for artworks usually come suddenly to me, being “inspired” by a movie, series, painting, amongst many other things. I’ve also learnt that I enjoy working most of the time with a clear idea of what I want the ending product to be, and seeing that vision come to life little by little. Most of my works are a representation of my main theme for the IB, human emotions, and the way in which these connect with humans and present themselves in different moments of life.
Creation process of the previously shown piece, based on an initial sketch in notebook and afterwards moved digitally to iPad Air on Procreate.
Evidence of virtual creative thinking process of the piece made on Procreate on iPad Air. The inside lines were added in order to express the circular shape of the path, as if it were hollow.
Evidence of the process made for the elaboration of the piece. Based on the design of a beehive, or joint hexagons, the first figure was established which, and in order to maintain balance an extra hexagon was added at the top. A print of the initial design was printed in order to place the nails in the already painted wood, and afterwards the threads were added based on the color.
Evidence of process made digitally on procreate based on the initial square in the middle, and afterwards adding lights and shadow to highlight the piece.
Progress made digitally on iPad Air (Procreate), based on the picture shown in the first image. A final sketch was made and copied to match the four times of the day.
