Footbridge beautification works, Shatin
Other than men, civets, lynxes, and squirrels are common inhabitants in the Shatin district. However, they had received little care than to men and our human neighbors. The renovation project of footbridge NF316 features our friendly animal neighbours in the area. By using the covered space under stairways and the circular ceiling of this giant structure, I tried to bring in new lives by revealing the faces of civets, lynxes, and squirrels in these corners. The design is lively, bold, and energetic, shining new lights on the existing pedestrian path, lift tower, and cycle path.
Footbridge NF316 is a busy transport node for both pedestrian and vehicular traffic. The complex structure was bulky and dark in the daytime. The print with civets looking down from the branches lightens the space by creating a unique experience of walking under the trees and the softness of shade under the blue sky.
This is a covered corner under the pedestrian walkway. It is also an entrance to the Hung Muk Kuk Road Playground popular to the local kids. We created a playful and lively space by using a civet climbing up the column and jumping into the bush.
This is another covered corner crossing a major cycle path. We tried to bring in the fun element featuring pomelo, a kind of grapefruit named as "Shatin yu”in Chinese, and a group of squirrels coming for the fruits.
