Drop Light for Fritz Hansen
150th Anniversary Exhibition 2023

Drop light is a design work for the 'Korea Project' of the Fritz Hansen 150th Anniversary Exhibition in Seoul.
Designer Seokwoo Lee focused on finding the intersection of his personal design tendencies, Koreanness, and Fritz Hansen. In particular, he focused on the story of straight lines and curves, which are his main interests, and the study of the sculptural features of contrast and balance. The theme of the Fritz Hansen 150th anniversary exhibition, 'Eternal Beauty,' is also related to his study for beauty by organizing straight lines and curves into harmonious three-dimensional objects.
Drop light is characterized by a three-dimensional interpretation of flat features. We wanted to find the harmony of lines and planes that appears when the flat shapes of straight lines and curves are made three-dimensional. Instead of following traditional Korean design feature, He focused on solving his most personal interest as a designer who grew up with Korean culture, which can be interpreted as exploring Koreaness with a modern sensibility.
The light is a three-dimensional interpretation of the changes in form created by intersecting and joining lines. The initial sketches of the drop light were mainly an exploration of 2D sculpture. Later, it was produced through various experiments and prototypes. Through this process, two different drop trays were finally designed. The lampshade part, characterized by its fluid curves and changing faces, is combined with a solid wood support in the shape of a cylinder.
