Beyonderground is a graphic design festival that aims to promote graphic creativity and unite graphic designers, illustrators, street artists and the creative world from around the globe. The festival was first organised in 2013 in Hasselt, Belgium. That year the Finns and Belgians came along together so well, they decided to start planning a 2nd edition of Beyonderground in Helsinki. Werklig’s task was to generate ideas for the event, and design the visual material together with the Beyonderground team, and Belgian creative agency Ronny & Johny. The festival was organised in an old abattoir (built in 1933), that nowadays serves as a stylish restaurant and venue called Kellohalli. One room of the premises was reserved for a drawing event powered by Werklig and Finepress. We thought of ways to make the international designer guests work together, and came up with “The Magnificient Beyonderground Live Poster Creation Engine”. We gave black markers for the Belgians and Blue ones for the Finnish guests. They were then asked to draw campaign based themes – clichés of their countries on a poster template, that got its inspiration from playing cards. We also designed other visual material such as stickers, animated gifs, animations and a special Werklig - Ronny and Johnny section for the Beyonderground booklet that was handed out to the festival guests.
