Sun City bezeichnet man Planstädte in den Staaten Florida, Arizona und Kalifornien der USA, welche für Bewohner über 55 Jahren konzipiert sind. Nach diesem Vorbild erbaute wohl Bauunternehmer Josef Wulf ein Sun City am Rand des emsländischen Meppen. Der Seniorenpark am Heideweg ist die erste Siedlung für Senioren in Deutschland. Im Gegensatz zum amerikanischen Vorbild ist dies keine “Gated Community”, hier kann jeder ein und aus wie es ihm/sie beliebt bzw. sollange er/sie sich an die Besucheszeiten hält. Das einzige was die Anwohner vor Kindergeschrei und fremden Blicken schützt, ist ein begrünter Erdwall der die noch junge Siedlung umgibt.
