Those who know me a bit are aware that, besides playing with Illustrator and experimenting with data, I am a passionate scuba diver. Therefore, I decided to incorporate into this visualization a topic that is close to my heart and deeply concerns me: coral bleaching.

Coral bleaching refers to the phenomenon where corals loose their vibrant colors due to stress, often induced by rising sea temperatures. This leads to a breakdown of the symbiotic relationship between corals and algae, posing a severe threat to marine ecosystems.

In this visualization, you can observe the variation and increase in heat content within the top 700 meters of the world's oceans (measured in 10^22 joules) from 1980 to 2020. It also highlights the five worst coral bleaching events that occurred globally or locally during these years.

In understanding the impact on our oceans, it becomes clear that we are all stakeholders in preserving these delicate ecosystems. It is a collective responsibility to take action, whether through raising awareness or adopting sustainable practices, to ensure the health and resilience of our oceans for future generations.
