Golden Hour Visions:
Becca Durocher

This week in class we were instructed to explore golden hour light, capturing a few images shortly after sunrise or before sunset.

"Setting Sun"
Captured during sunset.

"Portrait: Sun-kissed"
Captured during sunset.

Challenges:
The biggest challenge I had this week was the time; in terms of both the limited timeframe of golden hour and the lack of my own personal time. Golden hour lasts about 30-60 minutes following sunrise or before sunset. This meant that I had to ensure I was available to shoot during these short time periods, which was difficult. Another challenge was the weather. Temperatures were consistently below zero, going down as low as -22 with the windshield. With these temperatures, I was not very motivated to be outside.

"Morning Commute"
Captured during sunrise.

"Soak Up the Sun"
Captured during sunrise.

Self-reflection:
The first 2 images were taken during sunset using my call phone. In terms of the lighting, I found that it produced warmer, more vibrant hues. This resulted in a more dramatic and intense glow and bolder contrasts. You can see this especially in the portrait image.

Images #3 and #4 were taken using my Sony A7iv with an 85mm lens during sunrise. You can see that the lighting is cooler in comparison to the first two and is lacking the vibrant red, orange, and pink hues produced by the sunset. The lighting during this time appears softer and as having less contrast.

"Sun Flare"
Captured during sunset.

This image was particularly interesting as it captured "sun pillars", resulting from the cold temperature.

Bonus images:

Though this isn't my best work, I did find it helpful to see the differences in golden hour lighting during sunrise vs. sunset. I will definitely be exploring this more in future and would love to experiment more with portrait photography ... maybe when it's a little warmer.

Thanks for being here ♡
