The 'History of Iranian Music' authored by Ruhollah Khaleqi stands as one of the pioneering and oldest research endeavors in Iranian musical heritage. Serving as a cornerstone in music studies within Iran, this book has been a key reference for enthusiasts and scholars alike. However, despite its profound significance, the cover design of this historical masterpiece had been overlooked for the past half-century since its original publication in Iran.
Recognizing the importance of giving this cultural gem a fitting visual identity, Mahoor Publishing, a renowned entity in the realm of music publications in Iran, approached me for the task of reimagining the book's cover. Faced with the challenge of creating a design that resonates with the historical essence of the content, I made a deliberate choice to depart from digital tools and computers. Instead, I drew inspiration from the composition, framing, and aesthetics found in historical illustrations and paintings from Iran's bygone era. Opting for a more traditional approach, I employed watercolors to hand-paint new characters reminiscent of the Qajar period's artistic style. The deliberate choice of this medium was aimed at capturing the essence of historical paintings.
The composition of the cover reflects a modern collage aesthetic, deliberately left incomplete. This intentional incompleteness serves as a symbolic nod to the book's own unfinished state, as its author, Ruhollah Khaleqi, passed away before finalizing the editing and completion of his work.
