One of my latest clients, WalterMart, needed an illustration that depicted people and shoppers in a busy Christmas scene in the Philippines. It would be called "Paskong Pinoy" or Filipino Christmas. They had been inspired by work created by the late National Artist of the Philippines Larry Alcala. He was known for his "slice of life" illustrations where he drew crowds of Filipinos in various contexts.
The client requested a number of things to be portrayed in the art, like a church, parols (Filipino Christmas lanterns), the WalterMart mascot Wally, Filipino food items such as bibingka and puto bumbong, and others. When the full list was received, I began sketching ideas and concepts.
After the preliminary line work was sent, minor adjustments were made. I then proceeded with the final color artwork. The amount of detail in the art, and the collaborative process, requires time, effort, and patience to complete. In the end, the goal is to produce art everyone can enjoy.
