Sponge Park Stromovka

Sponge Park Stromovka

The purpose of this project was a redesign of Ceaser's Island in Stromovka Park in Prague, Czechia. The island was historically used as the hunting grounds for royalty then converted to a public park later on. Currently this island is not highly developed due to tendancy for the Vltava river to frequently overflow its banks.
Figure 1: Site Analysis for Stromovka Park. The citizen science app iNaturalist was used to determine areas with high trophic diversity in order to potentially build on areas already utilized well by wildlife. Areas with a tendency for flooding were also shaded over with dark blue.
Figure 2: "Water you doing here." My concept for the park redesign was to be thoughtful regarding the flow of water but also the presence of both us and our nonhuman neighbors we share the space with. Most importantly, I think we should sometimes take ourselves less seriously, hence the pun.
Figure 3: Bubble map. Just a basic bubble map to delineate different prospective zones and their purpose. More info further.
Figure 4: Bubble map at a higher degree of refinement. This bubble map was the beginning of articulating purposes and flow of both animal users of the park (including people).
Figure 5: The final design.
Planting zone for flowering our proposed "perennial mounds"
Planting zone for our proposed Riparian forest species.
Planting zone for our wetland species.
Planting zone for our grassland species.
